In response to the US media's revelation that the Biden administration is considering offering permanent residency to millions of illegal immigrants, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla (TSLA), a major US electric vehicle manufacturer, posted a message on Thursday last week blasting the Democrats for 'opening the border to import voters'.
The US political news website Politico disclosed last week that a month ago, the White House publicly stated that it was considering taking a series of administrative measures to curb illegal immigration on the southern border, but the White House has not made any statements. Now, immigrant advocates who have been in contact with the Biden administration on these measures say that these measures do not seem to be imminent.
Three sources familiar with the government's plans revealed that Biden administration officials are studying whether to offer a group of undocumented immigrants who have lived in the US for a long time, similar to the "Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals" measure introduced by the Obama administration in 2012.
One idea put forward by government officials is to offer opportunities to cancel deportation programs for those who have lived in the US for more than 10 years and have citizen or resident relatives. If they meet specific requirements and the immigration judge approves the cancellation of deportation, the immigrants can obtain a green card.
Elon Musk reposted the relevant news on the X platform on Thursday last week, saying: "The goal of the Democrats is to import voters."
Elon Musk also said last Monday: "A few years ago, I was 100% in support of the Democrats. Now, I feel that our country needs a 'red wave', otherwise America is finished." In the US, red represents the Republicans and blue represents the Democrats.
A study by the Pew Research Center, a US polling agency, found that about two-thirds of illegal immigrants have been living in the US for more than a decade. If only immigrants who were in the US in 2021 are counted, the above plan of the Biden administration could give permanent resident status to about 6 million people.
Only US citizens can vote in federal elections, and those who obtain permanent resident status can apply for citizenship five years later. If the immigrant is married to a US citizen, they can apply for citizenship three years later.
