Venezuelan President Maduro announced at the online summit of heads of state of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that it will close the country's embassy and consulates in Ecuador and recall all diplomatic personnel to protest the Ecuadorian authorities' recent forced entry into the Mexican embassy in Quito.
The Associated Press reported that Maduro and other leaders who participated in the meeting expressed support for Mexico's request that the United Nations temporarily suspend Ecuador's membership as a United Nations member state. Among them, Maduro is the only leader to announce the closure of diplomatic facilities and the recall of diplomatic personnel.
Ecuador's security forces forcibly entered the Mexican embassy earlier this month and arrested former Ecuadorian vice president Glass, who was in the embassy and was under the protection of the Mexican side. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs subsequently announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
